Bishop Robert Sherburne was a monumental figure in the history of Chichester Cathedral. His life as Bishop of Chichester spanned the final decades of the ‘old’ church before it was swept away in the Reformation during the reign of King Henry VIII. Dying in his 9th decade in 1536, he was spared much of the desecration of churches and monasteries, but still trod a very thin line between following the whim of his monarch and his religious beliefs.
On the 28th April, as part of the Illuminating Chichester Cathedral Tour Series 2017, there is a guided tour bringing Sherburne’s world to life. With lots of quotations and anecdotes about the cathedral in the 16th century tour is both amusing and serious! Tickets can be booked through the Novium TIC, 01243 775888.
