What’s happened to the time?!
Regular passers-by in the heart of Chichester will have noticed that the clock faces on the Market Cross have lost their hands! Smiths of Derby have commenced work to replace the mechanism, which was originally installed in 1904 and has reached the end of its useful life.
The configuration of this mechanism with a separate ‘drive shaft’ to each face of the clock has meant that sometimes each face of the clock was showing a different time! It also gained and lost time according to weather conditions and temperature. The new mechanism will be fully automated and much more efficient.
However, for a few more weeks we’ll all have to rely on our phones and watches to make sure we arrive at our all important assignations on time!
