I would like to introduce myself as the new Chair of the Destination Management Organisation ‘Visit Chichester’.
I am newly appointed to the role from October 2018 and my task is to help re-energise the visitor economy in Chichester District. This is an enormously exciting opportunity for me and a great privilege to help define the new tourism marketing initiatives and structures for 2018 as well as supporting and improving our offer to the existing clients of the organisation.
I come to this role as a retired senior research scientist and long term management consultant working in the Life Sciences sector but it is as a Tour Manager and Institute of Tourist Guiding qualified Blue Badge Guide that I bring a real passion for engagement with our visitors and holiday makers to our region.
In Chichester City and District we possess unique assets when it comes to tourism. We now intend to significantly enhance the visitor economy in our region. That clear objective has been recognised by Chichester District Council and Chichester BID (Business Improvement District) who have jointly agreed to invest £100,000 in Visit Chichester each year for the next five years to help with the reinvigoration of our visitor economy.
That visitor economy supports 14% of the workforce and is worth approximately £411 million to the region. We wish to substantially expand this potential and to support year round visitor attractions and activities.
We have a great story to tell and truly unique assets: our magnificent Cathedral, the city walls, our nationally important Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery, Petworth House, the Weald & Downland Museum, Fishbourne Roman Palace, the Novium Museum, the Goodwood estate and festivals, Chichester Harbour – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our magnificent coastline and the South Downs National Park on our doorstep to name just a few of our amazing attractions.
It is my intention to engage directly with as many stakeholders in our joint enterprise as possible and I invite you to participate with Visit Chichester in helping to create an enormously exciting new chapter for tourism in our fantastic corner of England.
